I maaaaay have just rewritten the beginning of YOI as a mermaid AU. Maybe. Somehow. Don't look at me, I don't know what happened!
Happy V-Day?

The Annual Atlantics was coming up and Victor’s face was splashed across all the news-sheets. He was a hot contender for this year’s Atlantic Athlete of the Year after having won the last two years in a row for his beautiful dancing.
Yuuri gazed at his poster of Victor and sighed dreamily as he turned in idle circles. His tail flared out behind him, wide, colorful fins fluttering in the water, and he automatically made them shiver-dance so that the designs were shown off to their best extent. Of course, it was nowhere as near as pretty as Victor’s tail with its silvery white that faded into black. Victor’s tail was practically pearlescent if a pearl could be stripped of its pink and blue undertones. Purer than pearl, Victor’s tail shone like moonlight over the water and Yuuri had so many posters of Victor mid-swim with his tail flared that he felt as if he knew it as well as he knew his own tail.
His own swim-dance career had been a short-lived disaster. He’d seized up with nerves at the last performance, failing to hit the spins and dives that he’d promised on his program and instead shaking through them.
Still, the sight of Victor was a reminder to keep trying. Surely even Victor had had bad practices, even if they were so long before he became he famous that nobody knew about them!
He opened up the memory-pearl that held Victor’s last performance. He’d watched it so many times that he knew it by heart and ran it through his head when he was drifting off to sleep. When all hope seemed lost, it was comforting to take to the clear dance space and swim through Victor’s routine. Yes. Maybe that was just what he needed now!
Pulling on the resistance-minimizing scale top that he used for dancing, Yuuri swam out his window towards the dance space, hoping it’d be empty so he could practice. The family who kept the place clear of fish and weeds knew him and were used to his odd hours. He didn’t think any of the fact that the little merkids were watching his practice.
He closed his eyes and danced and tomorrow, when he woke to the news that his performance was a viral hit on the SSS (Sea-to-Sea Surfcast), he was the most surprised of them all.
