“We’re going to work on your smile again,” Toudou said determinedly, dragging Makishima behind him by the simple trick of holding Makishima’s hand and not letting go. The other boy stumbled, his attempts to dig in his heels and resist stymied by the sheer force of will that Toudou was demonstrating.

“Come onnnnn, Maki-chan,” Toudou whined when he realized that Makishima was delaying again. “Hurry! I got chairs put up under the mirrors for us so we can sit there and you can see your smile and how to fix it!”

“But I don’t want to,” Makishima said, giving up on physical resistance and letting himself be pulled along. “Who cares if I can smile properly anyway?”

“Everyone will like you better if you can smile nicely!” Toudou insisted, yanking at Makishima’s hand to cue him to climb up onto the stool in front of the news anchor’s dressing table. The man was busy interviewing some hotshot ace and wouldn’t mind two little children borrowing his space, right?

“But I can’t!” Makishima looked at his unimpressed reflection and scowled. Immediately, his reflection scowled back.

“Yes, you can! I’ll help!” Toudou poked his fat little fingers into the corners of Makishima’s mouth, pushing them upwards, “There! That’s a smile.”

In the mirror, it looked more like a grimace. But at least it was a small grimace.

“Okay, now – make your cheeks soft!” Toudou prodded Makishima’s cheeks, pushing them downwards. Makishima’s smile shrunk even more.

“And stop scrunching up your nose and forehead! That makes you look worried.” Toudou bossily pushed his fingers over Makishima’s forehead until it was sufficiently smooth, then tapped Makishima’s nose tip. “Smooth! No scrunching, Maki-san!”

“I feel like scrunching it more when you do that,” Makishima grumbled but obediently tried to unscrunch his nose. Toudou took his hands away with a triumphant, “Tada!” and Makishima peered at his reflection critically.

Huh. It was a much smaller smile than the ones that Toudou wore but it looked real. It looked happy.

He turned his head to thank Toudou for his help and missed the way his smile widened when he looked at the other boy’s face.

Junta is stressed. Hajime can tell from the tension in his shoulders, the tightness of his smile, like he's forcing it into place. That says enough. In any normal situation, Junta wouldn't actually expect Hajime to buy his fake smile. The thing is, this is as far from normal as they've ever been. This is their first date—their first proper date since they decided that they want to be boyfriends. Hajime doesn't blame Junta for being nervous at all. Not when he feels the same.

Except Junta's hands are shaking, his voice isn't doing much better, and he's avoiding looking at Hajime entirely. At this rate, their date is going to be the single most awkward moment they've ever shared, and Junta must know it too. If anything, it's only going to end up stressing him out even more. Hajime is going to have to think of something, and fast.

"Junta," he speaks up, breaking the silence between them that is quickly turning uncomfortable. He gives Junta's shoulder a gentle push. Telling him that he's overthinking things won't help, when it's something Junta does on a regular basis. He'll only end up taking it as a bad thing. Instead, he gives Junta a small smile. "It's not like we stopped being friends when we started being boyfriends."

Junta's eyes go wide as Hajime's words sink in. "…Oh."

"You don't have to impress me, or do anything special to make me like you. I already know I like you. You're not going to suddenly make me change my mind, either. We're out on a date, but we've gone out together so many times already. This isn't really any different from that. It shouldn't be."

Raising an eyebrow, Junta asks, "Not at all?"

Hajime bumps their shoulders together in reply. "Well. I was thinking we could go to the usual tea house and hold hands under the table. So I guess it's a little different."

"The tea house, yes." Junta's expression lights up. "That's a great idea. Especially the part about holding hands under the table."

Hajime leads the way. "See? You like me for a reason, huh."

"I like you for lots of reasons," Junta replies honestly as they sit down at a table.

"…Well." Hajime reaches under the table, taking Junta's hand into his and squeezing tightly. "I want you to remember that I feel the same. And that I have a good time whenever I'm with you. Just because it's us."

"Yeah." Junta grins, squeezing back. "You're right."
