Yuri whenever given the opportunity, is loud. His words, his fashion choices, his very actions; all of them draw attention to him and it's something Otabek knows incredibly well. He likes it, and it surprises him just as much as it surprises others. Otabek himself might be quiet and withdrawn, but only in situations he isn't entirely comfortable. Being with Yuri is different. With Yuri, it's easy to lose track of time instead of finding excuses to leave. He can talk and laugh without a second thought because it all comes easily. He doesn't have to force anything with Yuri and he likes that.
There are friends outside of skating that he can do this with, but when it comes to competitive figure skating circles, Otabek has never really been able to shake the feeling of being an outsider. He hasn't followed the same path as most of them and it's always made him feel like he doesn't quite mesh with them. He's never wanted to try.
Not until Yuri, who is so easy to befriend that it makes Otabek wonder why he usually finds it difficult. Being with Yuri is relaxing. It doesn't matter if they're spending time together at a competition or chatting online; Yuri is the easiest person to speak out, out of everyone Otabek knows. He doesn't miss the fact that Yuri is never quite as friendly with other people either. He knows that for all that Yuri puts him at ease and makes him comfortable enough to just be himself, he has the exact same effect with Yuri in return. It's satisfying, having such a mutually comforting relationship. It makes them feel like they can understand each other without even needing any words.
It makes sense, Otabek thinks, that when he feels their relationship shift from something platonic to something different, they're still on the same page. It's like matching a dance partner perfectly, step for step, spin for spin.
They wind up in each other's arms at the end of a banquet, the event itself long since abandoned so they can find somewhere quieter to be alone. Otabek isn't drinking, but he's so caught up in their conversation that he doesn't entirely know how Yuri goes from mimicking JJ to them ending up pressed against each other. It doesn't matter, he decides. They're here anyway.
"Hey," Yuri murmurs, leaning in. He exhales softly, sending a puff of breath tickling against Otabek's lips. "Are you gonna kiss me or not?"
Otabek replies with a kiss and Yuri snorts quietly, kissing him back harder. Just like everything else with Yuri, Otabek thinks, this feels easy too.
