(Anonymous) 2019-03-13 03:59 am (UTC)(link)One night, only a week into Oikawa’s shenanigans, Kageyama stands ugly frustrated, toothbrush in his mouth and toothpaste foam coating his lips. Oikawa takes a picture anyway. As much as Kageyama tries to ignore it, he can feel something in his chest flutter as Oikawa bursts into peals of laughter, light, dizzying.
Still, he’s annoyed.
“Oikawa-san,” he says, a warning.
Oikawa scoffs.
“Just because you don’t have legions of sweet, adoring fans waiting for you to update your social media doesn’t mean I don’t. I can’t keep them waiting, can I?” Oikawa huffs and lifts the camera again. “For some reason, they go crazy when I post anything about you. So smile, Tobio-chan!”

Kageyama Tobio had no clear memories of his birth family. The surface of his mind was swept clean and innocent by deep-reaching tendrils of a deliberate and irreversible curse. According to him, his early life began outside of Hoshido. He was a product of the cold north where winter settled in his bones, his skin pallid from years without sunlight, swallowed and forgotten in the kind of darkness that would not allow anything to grow. Only ripples below the surface of his dreams, and the faintest scent of cherry blossoms lingering on the back of his tongue, reminded him he had once known the taste of different air.
It was only once he was captured and returned to Hoshidan soil that he began to realize the foundation of all that he was built upon could not be trusted. He learned the story of his warrior father, who had fallen long ago in the ambush when he'd been stolen. He had the vaguest impression that his father's back had been tall and strong, and that was all. Tobio liked to believe he took after him in the sweeping lines of his shoulders and the stubborn set of his jaw. The hazy memory blurred as though it lay at the bottom of a lake, shimmering and unreachable to him stranded on the shore.
He met his mother for the first time, with him fully grown and towering over her slight form, hopefully trying to match her timeworn features against his own youthful ones. Her hair was dark and glossy like his, her gaze sad but kind in the way his could never be. She pressed the reins of a pegasus into his hands, an animal he did not remember but who clearly remembered him. Her laughter was bright like sun showers when the pegasus lipped at his hair and nudged at his stiff posture with her velvet muzzle. He bent down obediently when his mother beckoned, and she cupped his blushing cheeks in her cool palms and told him that he was the long lost prince of Hoshido. Even if her wayward son had forgotten her, this place would always be his home.
Since he did not know the shape his parents were meant to take in his life, Tobio did not know how to mourn the empty spaces they left behind. He just knew what was right and what was wrong. What Nohr had done to him, to them, was wrong. He raised a lance against the kingdom that erased his childhood. He raised an army to right all of the wrongs he uncovered.
His following was small at first – he took Hoshido's fierce master-of-arms, Daichi, Captain Michimiya and her sky knights, and the clever Tsukishima brothers in red and green, who led the royal spy network and were sworn to protect him. But they grew ever larger, because his path was the right one. He wasn't the most charismatic leader, and sometimes he frightened those he was trying to save, even though he knew in his heart what he did was right. He found indomitable Hinata protecting his sister from highway bandits, the siblings left parentless at the Nohrian border, and offered them a home to fight for and return to. He found a farm village razed by Faceless, and pulled Yachi from the ashes, and pressed a naginata into her shaking hands and showed her she could fight back. He came to the aid of a rebellion in occupied Cheve, beleaguered on all sides by Nohrian forces, and their brave leader Kiyoko lent her axe to their cause in return. His first dragon's blood was kindled into a righteous blaze by the injustices he saw along their long march to Windmire, and more and more people fell in line to support his rule.
Tobio brought them victories, but it was his failures that shaped him the most. Not every skirmish was without casualties. Not every rescue was fast enough, decisive enough, to be a success. He learned. He would do better.
It was most difficult to accept his own ignorance, but he learned from this as well. As they crossed the mountains, he had gotten lost in the fog and stumbled upon what he presumed was a wild animal caught in a poacher's trap. The struggling beast was sleek and long in body, with an even longer tail made of wavy fur that ranged in shades of warm russet to a deep chestnut brown. At first Tobio thought it was an unlucky dog and sought to free it, but as he drew nearer he saw it was some variety of fox so big that it came nearly to the height of his pegasus's withers, with patches of autumn-red leaves actually growing from its forelegs.
The metal teeth of the trap sank deep into one of its haunches. Based on the matted fur and lean angles of its ribs, it had been trapped like this for days, awaiting slow starvation or the possibility of a forgetful hunter's return. The desperate whining creature was now in the grisly process of gnawing the flesh from its limb to free itself.
"Stop that," Tobio commanded with a worried frown.
It whirled to see him in an instant, baring its bloodstained fangs and mustering a hoarse snarl. Animals tended to mistrust him, other than his pegasus, and he wondered if he should run and fetch someone with a softer touch, like Yamaguchi or Asahi. He didn't want it to thrash in its panic and injure itself further. But he was concerned about the state of the fox's hind leg, and he had a vulnerary in his bag, which he began to fish out.
Don't touch me, human! If you come anywhere near me, I'll devour you whole!
Tobio's pack spilled all over the forest floor. He stared in shock at the panting, snarling animal, who had clearly just spoken to him.
"How can you talk?" Tobio blurted. The unknown voice had been male in timbre, but strained wild with fear. There was unfamiliar magic involved, like he could feel the words pressing and tingling against his skin rather than vibrating through the air the way his own did. This was a creature he did not understand, and it made him suddenly more wary. "What are you?"
The fox's ears flattened against his narrow skull, intelligent eyes blazing a preternatural shade of gold. His back arched as his plumed tail lashed in tight, furious warning.
I'm a kitsune, idiot. You've heard the stories about my kind. I'll curse you and your kin for a thousand years if you dare touch me! Leave me here and run away!
Tobio considered for a moment. He had not, in fact, heard any stories about kitsune and their ability to lay curses. This was all new to him. But he couldn't in good conscience leave the wounded thing behind without at least trying to help. So he frowned to himself for a moment, trying to puzzle out a solution.
"Can I touch the trap if I don't touch you?" Tobio asked finally.
The kitsune stared hard at him, muzzle scrunching as he considered. His injured leg quivered with the effort it took him to remain upright, but the proud beast did not falter. They were at a stalemate.
What do you want?
"I want to set you free," Tobio offered. He thought that much as obvious, but maybe the distressed kitsune hadn't realized that his human hands could activate the trap's release. As long as he didn't struggle, it would take only a moment, and then he wouldn't lose his paw.
Idiot, the kitsune hissed again, the angry words whipping at his skin like a fierce wind. I mean, why would you seek to free me? What's your price? I don't grant wishes. You will never have my pelt. And I would rather die than owe you a life of servitude.
"Just don't kill me," Tobio frowned. "Let me help."
When the kitsune said nothing, Tobio took it as acquiescence, and stepped hesitantly closer. The tension hummed in the space between them, clear danger making the hair on the nape of his neck rise. But the kitsune held still.
He could feel golden eyes burning holes through him as he approached and slowly knelt by the animal's hindquarters. The kitsune loomed over him, imposingly tall and silent. His furry chest rose and fell too quickly, shallow panting betraying the pain he was trying to mask. Beneath the rusty scent of blood and decay, the fox's fur smelled like something sweet, like spring rain and cherrywood and new growth budding in damp soil.
Tobio moved as slowly as he could, the careful and deliberate way he moved when he sought to calm his pegasus after a harrowing battle. When there were no fangs at his throat nor claws in his belly, Tobio touched the cold metal of the trap. The jaws slid harmlessly open with a harsh clang.
Then everything went black.
It was Hinata who found him passed out on the forest floor, a bruise swelling rich purple-blue on his temple. He came to with a groggy moan. His thoughts swam syrupy slow through the thick fog that obscured them. What happened…? Where was the kitsune? Had he succeeded?
With a pounding headache, Tobio gradually pieced together Hinata's shrill screeching. His supply pack was empty, and his coin purse was gone. The kitsune must have struck him out cold and taken what he needed before fleeing. Tobio realized with a cold shiver how easy it would have been for the intelligent animal to tear his throat out as well, and how all his war efforts would have been in vain because he let his guard down just this once. He could have died here in these woods. He was a fool.
But he also saw the empty trap and the spent vulnerary, and felt like the exchange had been a fair one – his life spared for saving another's. He told Hinata he never saw who ambushed him, and they moved on, though Tobio was left to wonder if the kitsune survived his wounds after all. He would be more careful next time.
When they cleared the mountains, their army had the element of surprise, and so Tobio immediately marched on the capital. Tobio's stubborn will faltered only when he finally reached the bleak walls of Krakenburg Castle, and he remembered where he came from. The sunken fortress was as cold and soulless as the rest of Nohr, and Tobio had never called this place home, nor had he wanted to feel its ugly burn of rust and corruption stinging his nostrils ever again. He had been their hostage, and had never been made to understand why.
Tobio was a different person now. He had grown. He had learned not to trust so freely, and to protect himself in a way he never used to. He could not expect to find any allies here, and he thought he was ready to accept that. But it wasn't that he had never known kindness during his confinement, he realized too late, as he watched Kunimi and Kindaichi draw their swords and face him.
They had been his friends, once. If they came back to Hoshido with him, Tobio argued, they would be safe from their mad king. The three of them could stand in the sun and see things bloom for the first time. They could find springtime if they would only follow him there, and leave this place behind.
You left Nohr. You left us. We won't follow a traitor, they muttered darkly, and refused to meet his eyes ever again.
Tobio learned one more hard lesson at their hands: that right and wrong could look different depending on who was looking. He did not have the chance to give them a proper burial, not with the throne within his grasp, and so once he left he did not look back. Nohr crumbled before the force of his conviction, and with that, his war – and his youth – ended.

When Tobio returned to the peaceful sunlit walls of Shirasagi Castle, he felt much older than when he'd left. There was hard muscle built in his broad shoulders, fresh scar tissue knotted along the curve of his ribs, and a wintry chill that never quite left the handsome blue of his eyes. His surviving army disbanded to return to their homes and loved ones, the places they belonged. He watched them leave with something akin to satisfaction, because he had brought them home again, as many as he could.
As the mountain snow melted and the paths cleared, Hinata, Yachi, and Yamaguchi rode the countryside together to hunt down the remaining Faceless. The Tanaka siblings made their journey back to their Fire Tribe, and Nishinoya and Asahi to their Wind Tribe, and it was quieter in their absence. Kiyoko flew west, with her head high and a flower pinned proudly to her chest, to lead her beloved Cheve into independence. And Tobio's place was here, so he remained.
The throne was his birthright. The blood of his ancestral dragons flowed through his veins as proof. While he truly had no idea what that meant, he knew that this was always meant to be his place, and he had no other to return to, not now.
Tobio accepted the weight of the crown without hesitation, and became their king. It was what was expected of him.

Also I have a very specific concept for what I want to leave for you but in my vlockers planning document under "Lin" it literally just says "sighs in oikage" and this probably says a lot.
I love you and your murder hands and your Soft Domesticity (tm) which eventually metastasized into ACTUAL domesticity, who ever would have believed it. You are A BEAUTIFUL, ELEGANT CREATURE (dog) and I am very happy to have met you.
