The pan spat-hissed at her and Noin jerked her hands back automatically, glancing about for the dish towel.
“I’ve got it,” Millardo said from behind her, reaching out to hand her the dish towel so she could wipe the edges of the pan clean. Naina was braced on his hip, sucking her thumb and watching her mother with wide eyes as Noin expertly (defused the threat) got rid of the excess fat on the pan’s rim.
“Thanks.” Noin turned to give Millardo a quick kiss on the lips, then bent down to kiss Naina on the forehead as well.
“Good morning, baby girl,” she cooed, tickling under Naina’s fat chin with a forefinger. “Where’s your brother?”
Naina popped her thumb out of her mouth long enough to say solemnly, “Sleepyhead.”
Her parents’ joined laughter mingled over her head, Noin leaning her weight against Millardo’s other side and tucking herself against him as comfortably as possible while still keeping an eye on the stove.
“He got that from you,” Noin teased her husband as she poured the batter out onto the beaten-about but still serviceable pan. “Here we are, making breakfast under Naina’s supervision,” she paused to tickle her daughter on the nose, earning herself a delighted giggle, “While Milou sleeps.”
“He’s the dinner chef,” Millardo countered. “Stays up late to make sure the kitchen’s clean after dinner.”
Thinking back to how Milou had managed to smear mashed peas all over a wall before being caught, Noin said wryly, “Don’t you mean he stays up late to make sure we have something to clean?”
“That too,” Millardo allowed. He swooped down to kiss Noin again, just a light brush of his lips over hers, then turned to offer her Naina.
“Here. Why don’t you take her back to her brother? Maybe some handsome prince will serve you three breakfast in bed,” he suggested with a glint of amusement in his eye.
“What a charming prince that would be indeed.” Noin bounced Naina on her hip and then nudged Millardo playfully. “He’d better watch out though. The pancake’ll burn in a second.”
Millardo spun to deal with that, long hair flying about him, and for a moment mother and daughter alike were enraptured by the stream of light through the white hair and the prism-like sparkle along the long strands.
Noin had never expected a fairy tale ending and yet here she was.
