the running ticker tape of miles' life would include the following headlines: city prosecutor's career soars to new heights; city prosecutor encounters local annoyance; local annoyance opens up shop as a defense attorney despite city prosecutor's best efforts. the lattermost miles would admit is too unwieldy for print, but he also has a mountain of evidence regarding its necessity. it is, as he might say in court, germane to the situation: it is the crux, the very heart of the matter.

miles has built an entire life out of anticipating his opponents. defense attorneys were all the same in one sense—they were reliably without ethics, moral compass unfocused and spinning like a child's toy. they too often use appeals to emotion, employing anecdotes in order to clutter the truth. he knows when the defense will move to upset the flow of a trial, can guess what evidence the defense would move to exclude from the record. miles can set a clock by the various objections phoenix will use in any given day in court; for a trial attorney he is shockingly undisciplined, although miles did not have from the start a high opinion of phoenix wright and his cohort.

even when phoenix wright concedes the point, miles can see how his gears turn on the inside. the trial might move on to another point that miles will cleanly and efficiently make, but phoenix is still thinking about it, how to argue his way back again. miles would have hated to have him as a junior partner in any firm, although he knows better than to think phoenix would work for a corner office. they are at least both better than that.

a prosecutor's office has a tight budget and little luxuries, so miles brings in his own china and buys tea out of pocket. the office's only tea service set is white and blue, with clean lines wrapping around the rim of each cup and plate, a dark navy blue as serious and plain as a three-piece suit. miles drinks more black tea than he should admit, lest his sister find out how overcaffeinated he becomes on late nights, knee deep in judges' opinions and rulings. sometimes he feels like he's still at school, when he wins or loses, when he sees phoenix wright with that ridiculous light in his eyes. he's a man who somehow manages to divine the truth no matter how strange the circumstances, and miles has yet to understand how he manages to so consistently succeed when failure should be so imminent. he could time clocks and steep tea by phoenix wright and how miles has come to increasingly rely on his existence, the way phoenix prepares nothing on paper before opening statements. it infuriates him.
