• actually, my biggest want right now are fic recs and book recs. I'm watching naruto shippuden for the first time in my life, as a result of some kakairu fic I happened across so uhhh, if you have any naruto fic recs that don't require heavy background knowledge because I'm probably still missing most of that? that would be appreciated.
• honestly you could probably also link me to romshuu fanart and it'd probably be fanart that I've seen before but I'll still appreciate the hell out of it.
• also (veg-friendly) recipes! especially ones that don't take very long because I only have a cooking attention span of half an hour.

"Dreaming of Sunshine" by Silver Queen!

it is self-insert reincarnation (as shikamaru's AU-twin sister), and it does start slowly, but boy does it improve from its already solid base. the scope now is frankly epic! and it features LOTS of shikamaru and nara sibs bonding. it doesn't fridge sakura either, and it portrays the supporting characters of that generation with lots of love.

another thing is that it does recap the entire Naruto series, although with the ripple effect of Shikako's actions. so some things from canon do change! but the beginning is pretty much a recap of the original series except with Shikako, so it's actually a good way to re-experience the story in my opinion lol.

i'm gonna leave u with this comment where i totally went off about it in a fic rec post 2 or so years ago, because i haven't had time to read it recently (and it's still ongoing/updating regularly! gosh the author is so cool) and have forgotten a lot of it ;;

"I can’t overstate my love and admiration for this fic enough. It is currently my favourite fanfic (and I have just looked through my entire favourites list on FFN and AO3 Bookmarks). It takes a much-maligned genre/trope, self-insert reincarnation, and makes it into a story that is compulsively readable and wholly believable. The self-insert character is not a Mary-Sue in any way and grows with the story, and the bits of memories she has from her past life in “the real world” / our world only creates another common point for readers to relate to the Naruto world even more (in my personal opinion anyway). The reincarnation angle also allows for the exploration of the events of the early Naruto timeline (from Naruto’s - or to be more precise, from Shikamaru’s infancy and beyond) to be explored from a more mature point of view. This follows the series of Naruto, so if, like me, it’s been a while since you read or watched it, it’s a great way to relive it with a twist. It also makes the fillers really interesting and actually engaging and anything that can do that gets a complete A+ in my book.

He’s sitting on the sidelines, minding his own business, when Muro-chin slides next to him on the bench and says, “I’ll write up your history report if you play along with what I’m about to do.”

“I don’t need help with—” Atsushi protests, before swallowing it with his Ramune candy as Muro-chin butts his head into Atsushi’s neck like a cat wanting to be pet.

“Wh—”

Muro-chin looks up from his ridiculous display with a glare that settles somewhere near Atsushi’s pancreas. Right. Play along.

The stands are filling up with spectators for their game against Shuutoku. Atsushi hesitates, but runs a hand through Muro-chin’s hair. His fingers parse it like poetry, curling around a thread of strands like a stanza.

The softness doesn’t surprise him, but the scent does. Light, like elderberry sweets. He wants to taste.

He tugs on his handful of hair, and Murochin jerks forward until they’re nearly touching noses. The people around them have started to take notice, but Atsushi has never cared about what others think before, and he isn’t about to start now.

It’s a game. He doesn’t even know the stakes.

The kiss makes up for it, anyway.

Because you literally asked for book recs: hey Kii read Ninefox Gambit. I meant to go through my 2019 to-read list and judge whether anything else seems like ~A Kii Book~ but really... just... read Ninefox Gambit, then you can cry with me and I really do feel like it's something you would enjoy, no one is cishet, gay and polyamorous relationships are the norm, and there's backstabbing knifey mindgame politics all the way down. Except now I'm just trying to think of whether any of the ships count as exes.

Also, if you haven't read Seanan McGuire's Wayward Children series, I want to recommend those as well. I especially enjoyed Every Heart A Doorway and am excited to read the fourth book that came out in January just as soon as my library's waitlist spits it up.

And on a note that isn't book recs: let me bring you some romshuus.

It's funny because I was browsing through pixiv like "do I even know what a romshuu is, what's the good dynamic for this ship, what if I cannot identify Good Romshuus For Kii" and then I aggressively threw myself back into SB69 and crawled into your romshuu hole for a minute so you know what, we got this.

And then in the category of "things I learned while browsing the pixiv romshuu tag": after season two everyone went SUPER HARD for pre-breakup romshuu with Shuuzou's gothy pre-canon look?? There is so fucking much of it. So much. And so many doujin previews or in some cases, entire comics.

-[THIS] is a comic about romshuu while they're still in their band together, wherein Rom gets drunk and hops on Shuuzou literally in front of their bandmates, which I think is hilarious and delightful and am therefore bringing to you. It's a little NSFW but more R15 than R18 and is kinda sad but also cute. It's literally called End of Beginning so like... Kiicore.

-[THIS] is a log of several comics, it's basically all porn, do not open this in public unless you're feeling especially shameless and daring. It's a lot of pre-band-breakup romshuu featuring Pushy Bottom Shuuzou which I found DELIGHTFUL, also Shuuzou climbs on Rom to sit on his dick and Rom comes before Shuuzou can even get it in himself, that's why I liked this, what a fucking mess. And in another comic there's snowballing and idk how you feel about snowballing but my opinion on Shuuzou kissing Rom with Rom's jizz in his mouth is: Yes.


Now you get to tell me whether I dug up anything you haven't seen before or whether this is a walk down memory lane. I hope it's a nice walk, either way. I have no idea how much you browse pixiv so like, I sure did go on a romshuu adventure!!

Happy vlockers, Kii! Here are some book/fic recs for you (with a couple of bonus recipes at the end).

Cynthia Lord, Rules.  Younger grade YA written from the POV of a 12-year old girl.  It's a quick read, but it's a favorite of mine, and I thought it might interest you given your line of work.  I've read a lot of books with neurodivergent characters that do it really badly, but this one I thought was the opposite.  It's a story about people living their lives, making mistakes, and fixing them, without the inspiration porn or "oh no, that poor disabled person, how pitiful" that shows up so frequently.

Tomi Adeyemi, Children of Blood and Bone.  Probably the best fantasy book I've read in the past several years at least.  The narrator for the audiobook is also excellent if you like audiobooks.

Pretty much anything by Oliver Sacks.  If you want easily readable books about all sorts of weird things human brains do, Oliver Sacks is a great place to look.  I haven't read all of his books, but I've enjoyed the ones I have finished.

Joshua Hammer, The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu
The first of these is fairly US-centric, but two very well-written books about books/writing and why they matter.

Naruto fic recs:AO3 user 100demons.  Most of their work is one shots that don't require knowledge of anything beyond the Pain's Invasion arc.  A lot of their work explores the trauma/healing that we don't see as much of in canon.

AO3 user Darkprism's Monoshizukanohi series.  This one should probably be a recommendation with reservations.  On some level, this series is 650k of very self-indulgent kinky smut, but it also has some of the best AU characterizations of Naruto characters I've read.  It's also not entirely PWP; most of the stories are about developing relationships and characters trying to figure out where they belong.  Heavy on angst with a happy ending and mutual pining.  Warnings for multiple characters with noncon/dubcon experiences in their pasts  (and present for the SasuNaru stories, which probably need more warnings than the others).


Recipes!

Bean Chili
1 can each kidney, cannellini, black, and pinto beans, drained and rinsed
1 large can crushed tomatoes
1 carrot, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1 package vegetarian hamburger crumbles or chorizo (optional)
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tb oregano
1 tb chili powder
1 tb paprika (smoked if you have it)
1-2 tsp salt

Saute onion and garlic with some oil or butter in a large pan until onions are translucent. Add all other ingredients and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook until carrots are soft (~1 hour).


Sweet Potato Carrot Soup
1 large onion, roughly chopped
1 sweet potato, peeled and roughly chopped
5-6 carrots, peeled and roughly chopped
4 cups (1L) vegetable broth
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp clove
1 tsp curry powder (optional)

Saute onion and garlic with butter in a large pan until onions are translucent. Add spices and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Add all other ingredients, bring to a boil, and simmer for 45-60 minutes (until vegetables are soft). Let cool, then transfer to a blender and blend until smooth.


Coconut Chickpea Soup
2 bell peppers (red, orange, or yellow), seeded and chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed
4 cups (1L) vegetable broth1 can light coconut milk
1/3 cup pearl barley, uncooked
2-3 chili peppers, split and seeded (I usually use Serano peppers, but any hot pepper should work)
1 garlic clove, minced
2 tsp curry powder
salt, to taste

Saute onion, garlic, and pepper in a large pan until onions just start to turn translucent.  Add all other ingredients except coconut milk and bring to a boil.  Simmer until barley is cooked and soup has thickened (~45 min).  Remove hot peppers and stir in coconut milk.
