This has gone so horribly wrong.

Lan Xichen had intended to help Jin Guangyao a little. He's been busy lately, and others have always been cruel, speaking ill of him, so it was natural for Lan Xichen to be the kind face among them. His sect's values even instructed it, instilling such values in him.

But it's nothing so impersonal, either.

Lan Xichen has felt sympathy for Jin Guangyao's position; as hardworking as he is, cruel words are still spouted. As if his family situation isn't painful enough!

Lan Xichen can relate to that, a little. His mother was never well respected, per se. But where he had the ability to visit her and the care and love of his father, Jin Guangyao had only a loving mother people looked down on… it's really too cruel! Neglected by his father, spited by strangers and acquaintances because of his mother’s circumstance.

But even his sympathy and understanding aside, there's more reason Lan Xichen has found himself failing miserably at saving Jin Guangyao the trouble of his laundry today: his own fondness. These torn robes are such a poor expression of his feelings that he finds himself staring in dismay.

There's nothing he can do, the robe has been ripped already. He thought he could handle it, had learned to use less force, but now further attempts only risk tearing more clothes.

He is still deep in thought, contemplating how to fix his mess, one that has only caused further work for Jin Guangyao rather than save him any, when none other than Jin Guangyao appears! In his (admittedly foolishly) unexpected failure, he had lost track of when he would return, though his original plan would have been perfect, down to the second, he’s sure.

Jin Guangyao spares a glance between Lan Xichen and the ruined laundry, a bemused grin on his face. That's… better than the displeasure or disappointment Lan Xichen had imagined. Better to have made him laugh, even at his own expense!

“As much trouble as ever,” Jin Guangyao shakes his head fondly, which receives a defeated smile in return.

“I'm afraid so. I'll replace the robes,” Lan Xichen offers.

When Jin Guangyao shakes his head this time, it's with a different, more serious intent, but gentle. “No need,” he says softly, sweeping to Lan Xichen's side. “When I spoke of trouble, I meant the laundry, and not Second Brother, after all.”

“How kind,” Lan Xichen smiles, still looking unconvinced. “Yet my attempt to alleviate you of some trouble resulted in more, and the robe is still torn. Allow me to right my mistake.”

Jin Guangyao places a hand over Lan Xichen's. “And I insist there has been no trouble caused. Second Brother has caused less trouble to me than anyone.”

“A-Yao, you are too gracious. Even if you say that, the robes are ruined. Let me make it up to you.”

Certainly, Jin Guangyao is honest with his sworn brother and not the least bit upset. Therefore, there is nothing to be made up. Yet, Lan Xichen's sense of right and wrong, his sense of duty will not allow him to relent on the matter; this Jin Guangyao knows well.

He thinks a moment, and smiles again.

“Second Brother must be tired. The morning was full for you, and yet you made time to help me.” A pause, but one that comes with a pointed look, one that says there should be no protest about how much help was actually provided. All Jin Guangyao sees, anyway, is the effort Lan Xichen went to that others would not.

And the reason for that effort, which no other person has shown him; a feeling that is by no means unreciprocated.

“If Second Brother insists… he could help me to relax?”

This benefits them both with time to unwind as well as one another's company, but how can Lan Xichen argue with wishes like this? There is nothing to say compensation for trouble must be troublesome in return.

Lan Xichen hadn’t expected this sort of request, but upon reflection, perhaps he should have. Slowly, a soft smile spreads across his face. “If it is truly what you wish for, I won’t decline.”

“We have had little time to ourselves, haven’t we?”

Jin Guangyao has a point, and leave it to him to smartly use something like this to their advantage. Lan Xichen admires that resourcefulness. He has to admit that, were their time together left in his hands alone, they may not end up with much. By no means does he not want time for the two of them, but his duty towards his work may win out. Often, too, Lan Xichen is more likely urging others together than indulging in closeness himself. They’re faults he’s conscious of, and thankful for Jin Guangyao’s ability to balance them out.

He intends to right those faults, too. It would be unfair to them both to sit complacent. It would be wrong to make Jin Guangyao feel unappreciated when he’s far from it.

“I’m yours all evening,” Lan Xichen agrees, decisively.

Jin Guangyao raises his eyebrows, but his expression is fond disbelief. It truly isn’t often these days that they have such time between just the two of them. “Can you afford all evening?”

“I will.” Lan Xichen’s mind is made up. His A-Yao is most certainly worth it. Perhaps they ought to schedule a night like this regularly; then, maybe, Lan Xichen could better show his affection. “And how shall we spend the time?”

“I have a few ideas,” Jin Guangyao smiles, looking truly pleased with the outcome they’ve reached as he presses a lingering kiss to Lan Xichen’s lips. No doubt, Lan Xichen can feel that smile.

In fact, Lan Xichen thinks about that feeling for days.

Truthfully, he never quite forgets it.

The best thing about doing this, Ramuda thinks, as he presses the lipstick to Jakurai's skin, is that Jakurai can't talk while he does it.

Though he does try. "Uh uh," Ramuda says, tilting Jakurai's jaw up before he can make Ramuda smudge it. Jakura's jaw goes slack again, and Ramuda continues.

The worst thing about doing this, is Ramuda immediately wants to smudge the perfect outline himself.

Wei Ying reaches up and pulls down his hair. He feels Lan Zhan’s questioning gaze on him, and explains, “It’s easier to drive without my ponytail pressing against my head, you know?”

“Your bangs are in your eyes,” Lan Zhan says. “It’s--”

“-- unsafe,” they both say, Wei Ying with a bright grin and Lan Zhan with a small frown. Lan Zhan takes off his glasses and slowly puts them in Wei Ying’s hair, pushing his bangs back so he can see. As he draws his hands back, he brushes against Wei Ying’s hair, his forehead, and spreads fire.

“Oh, Lan Zhan,” Wei Ying says, suddenly breathless. “Thank you.”

“No need,” Lan Zhan murmurs. “To say thank you.”

Wei Ying perks up. “Really? That’s a cool thing to say, isn’t it?”

Lan Zhan hums.

The further they drive, the skyline comes up, shooting bright and proud towards the sky.

“Isn’t it beautiful, Lan Zhan?” Wei Ying says. “This is why I love to drive at night.”

“Beautiful,” Lan Zhan echoes. Wei Ying feels his gaze, and crouches down in his seat.

“Ah, are you trying to see over me? Can you see without your glasses?”

“I can.” Lan Zhan fidgets in his seat before looking back out his own window. “Beautiful.”
