Sometimes Hajime regrets his choice to share his life with a demon. Sometimes he regrets every choice that lead to this point. Sometimes he wishes he'd done something, anything, other than the things he's done.

If he's honest, it's most of the time.

But then Oikawa grins, and his hundreds of white needle teeth shine in the moonlight, and he asks whether Hajime has ever noticed the fucking stars, except he calls them "sparkle lights" because he's never seen them before.

Oikawa has talked about how his life was cold, and dark, and pain, before Hajime made his bad choices. He's talked about it as if that's how every life is, as if it's normal to spend every second fleeing, chasing, killing or eating.

Oikawa asks about the stars again, and Hajime explains what he knows. Oikawa laughs, and laughs, and laughs, then reaches out, and out, and out, stretching his flesh into something black and inky and writhing like what Hajime knows he's made of but ignores most of the time. Because it's creepy. And, for a moment, it seems like he will actually manage to touch them.

But then he retracts back into his human form, and giggles, and says something about how the damned stars—which he only just learned exist—remind him of Hajime.

And that makes things okay. It really does. It makes the choices just fine.

He wishes he was being sarcastic.

“Tobio-chan is running in the Fall Special.”

The way Oikawa says it, it's like they put her on a diet without carrot bread again. Her ears flick in irritation. Clumps of grass fall from her clenched hands. She lets the sunset pour orange and bright into her eyes, like if she just stares hard enough, she can stare it all down.

“Who cares? You'll just beat her again.” Iwaizumi isn't looking at her, but it still feels like the whole of her gaze is sitting right there on her chest. Warm. Familiar. A feeling a little bit like forever. “Besides, she might run like you, but she isn't you.”

“Of course not! Did you see her new dress? Ugh, she looks like a safety cone. Team Karasuno deserves her.”

The field is green, the hills even greener. It's been a while since they've had time to visit Miyagi but it's just as Oikawa remembers it — the earth had thundered under the clip of her feet in the exact same way it did when she had chased Iwa-chan over the hill when they were six, through the park when they were ten. Up onto the overlook where they’re sitting together in the sweet-smelling grass, now at seventeen. The same, the same. All the earth of her home smelling just as it always did, with her Iwa-chan by her side.

But for the first time, Iwaizumi hadn't qualified for the finals.

“Hey!” It's like Iwaizumi can sense the doubt rippling through her. Oikawa hunches over even more, pouting into her knees. Faint white scars trace over the skin and she used to hate them, but now, now it’s like a map of all her hard work and pride, finally leading her here. “I'll be waiting for you at the finish line, so your stupid face better be the first one I see!”

Some things really don’t change at all. Oikawa’s breath flutters in her chest, like she’s just ran the grand course, like she’s just run the entire length of the clear sky. And some things just won’t ever be the same again, will they.

“Better do something about your hair then, Iwa-chan! You really think they’d let someone slow and ugly stand at the finish where everybody can just see you?”

Oikawa leaps to her feet before the Shittykawa! ignites, and she’s halfway down the hill before Iwaizumi is even standing.

The wind whistles the song of Iwaizumi swearing from uphill, but Oikawa doesn’t look back even once as she runs the path because she knows, she knows, she knows, her heart clenching something fierce with the surety of the sun setting and the sun rising again over the green hills of home — Iwa-chan has to catch up to her, Iwa-chan will catch up to her, no matter how far she always runs ahead.

Miyu!  A good soft dog I'm very happy I finally got to meet at Katsu!  Pokego pig hunting with everyone was so much fun, as were the Miyu cuddle piles.  Please know that my brain has decided that if you were a Pokemon NPC, your challenge text would read "PokeFan Miyu wants to cuddle," and your sprite would have a cuddle pile with Mimikyu, Shaymin (with flower crown), and some good pups.
