i know this is going to sound fake but i don't think i truly shipped bokuaka until i wrote this. and really i'm just glad i could finally write you a giftfic, haha. happy valentine's, aj, i hope you enjoy it! \o/

Someone wise once said, "You always want the things you can't have." Or maybe they didn't, and Bokuto's making that up. Maybe what they actually said was, "You idiot, stop spending volleyball practice staring at your setter's butt," and Bokuto just hadn't been paying attention, because he clearly missed that life lesson. In all fairness to Akaashi, though, Bokuto spends just as much time staring at his face. It's to build a good working relationship. Honest.

Anyway the point is Bokuto's in second year and he's never dated anyone—actually, he thought he'd never want to date anyone, but along comes this first year who's put straight onto the first string as setter, and, okay, Bokuto wants to date him pretty bad. When he imagines it, though, it's always a disaster. In his dreams, Akaashi turns him down with that stone-cold glance he's so good at doing, and mournful saxophone music plays into the night as Bokuto wanders home in the rain, alone with his failure.

Luckily, real life doesn't have a mournful saxophone soundtrack, but there's still the crushing weight of failure and the failing weight of a crush, and there is very much still Akaashi's butt to stare at all through volleyball practice.

Bokuto comes close, a couple of times, to asking him out. He clears his throat like he's going to say something important, and then doesn't, and Akaashi looks at him like he's from another planet, which, to be fair, he sort of is, but he reckons his otherworldly appeal is all part of the package. Bokuto would make a very convincing alien. He just wouldn't have the strength of character to abduct anyone, because that would be pretty mean, but sometimes he wishes he had a tractor beam that he could point straight at Akaashi—maybe then he'd get the message.

It's after practice one day, when he's beginning to lose faith, and even his usual hobbies are losing his zeal, that he first sees a glimmer of hope, a light in the sky. Like a beacon, Akaashi's walking towards him with sweat rolling down his face and a towel around his neck, and Bokuto clears his throat, just in case he needs to say something important.

"Bokuto-san," is how Akaashi always greets him. Bokuto would be lying if he said the way Akaashi pronounces his name leaves him anything other than weak at the knees. "Can we talk?"

"We can always talk," Bokuto says. "We can talk whenever you like. Hey, look, we're talking already!"

Akaashi smiles. "We are. I was hoping to get your opinion on something."

"I'm full of opinions," Bokuto says. "Practically bursting at the seams. I've got opinions on everything from onions to outer space. Go on, try me!"

"I'll pick an intermediate option," Akaashi says. "You're older than I am, so I thought you might have some more insight into this... I'm looking to confess to someone."

Bokuto's heart sinks to the floor. "Oh."

"I need your advice," Akaashi says, "on whether or not it's a waste of time. You see, the person I'm thinking of confessing to... well, he's very friendly with me, but he's that way with everyone, so I don't know if it's any different for him."

"He sounds fake," Bokuto says. "You should confess to someone more genuine."

"I'm not done," Akaashi says. "He's not fake, really—everything he does comes from the heart, even if he can be a bit overwhelming sometimes. And when I'm around him, I feel the need to look out for him, like he's always looking out for me. But I don't know if he's the sort of person who'd be receptive to my confession, really. I don't know him as well as I'd like to."

Bokuto hums. "Maybe you should get to know him first," he says. And then get to hate him! he thinks gleefully. There's such a great joy in thinking unreservedly nasty thoughts about a stranger—things he'd never ever voice, because he knows it's an unhealthy way to think, but he lets himself wallow, for now.

"Okay," Akaashi says. He clears his throat. "Are you doing anything this weekend."

"Me?" Bokuto says, snapping back to cheerful attention. "Of course! At your disposal!"

"We should hang out," Akaashi says. He looks at his feet, then back up at Bokuto. "Get to know each other a little better."

"Alright," Bokuto says, "I'll put it in my diary."

It's only once they've said goodbye for the evening that it clicks in Bokuto's head—that Akaashi wants to get to know him! Him! He runs out of the changing room shouting, but by then Akaashi's already left. It doesn't matter, though—they've got the weekend to get to know each other better, and maybe then Bokuto will have the courage to stop pining and start acting.
