I really really really like it so far! It's got all the weird things I like in a series- unique art, josei (or seinen) target audience, historic setting, and WEIRD CULTURAL STUFF (yay Rakugo!). I remember hearing about the manga a while ago and I'd wanted to read it but it's not licensed or even scanlated :((( so I'm really glad that it got an anime adaptation and that it seems to be really good so far. I was worried cause DEEN is animating it but so far they're doing a nice job? There's not much action so hopefully the animation quality won't drop.

Ummm so basically every year on January 4th New Japan (a wrestling company) holds a really big show (Wrestle Kingdom) that's like the equivalent of Wrestlemania here in the US. Last year my twitter feed EXPLODED with people who watched the event. Like, even people that I didn't know liked wrestling were watching it. I'd seen a few of the guys and they were really cool/cute/whatever lookin' and it seemed like it was different than mainstream western wrestling, which I've never cared for. So I watched that years Wrestle kingdom and I was totally hooked. Turns out it totally was different than WWE, everyone has great costumes, the storytelling is fun and easy to understand even without subtitles or English commentary, the personas of the wrestlers are all really interesting (and most of them are sweethearts IRL) and I got totally addicted! I've since branched out into some smaller western/American promotions that function more independently/totally different from WWE, and I'm slowly working into Japanese women's wrestling too. I've been to a few shows for both cause they've realized their popularity outside of Japan!

AAAAAA OMG!!!!!! I TOTALLY AGREE and those are things i really love too, especially like historal and cultural stuff! i had a look at some rakugo videos on youtube after i watched the first episode and it was pretty cool, im glad the anime included like the two full rakugo performances i was worried itd just be mentioned or brief but im glad it was the whole stories!! it seems really cool and interesting so far so im excited for the coming eps
and aww man i hope the anime will bring some more attention to the series and maybe scanlations with it so the manga is accessible, itd be nice to read it too

Yeah, I've meant to watch/do more research into rakugo! I knew a little bit about it before watching the series so I wasn't going in totally blind. I really liked that so far all the characters have different performance styles, and DEEN has actually done a really good job with their camera angles to denote different characters speaking during performances. I really hope they can keep it up!
I haven't read scanlations in so long cause I'm really not a fan of them... Depending on the length of the manga I guess it's possible it could actually get licensed for sale in English/US territories. It is a pretty obscure topic though, and it's josei... Hrm.

I'm glad you found it interesting! You can generally find Wrestle Kingdom for download pretty easily if you're curious! It's a good place to start cause it's the beginning of a new year so it means new plot lines and title changes and whatnot. I can also totally find you a DL if you want lmao, or just link you a couple good matches cause WK is generally around 4... hours... long... sob.
Sadly that guy is actually leaving NJPW for a branch of WWE ;A; I'm gonna miss him and his cape and his entrance theme. They probably won't make him change his overall style or how he wrestles, but I'll miss what I've known about him so far. I'm going to try my best to support him here though!

I have 2 dogs so I try to pet them near constantly, and I'm one of those people that will totally come up and ask to pet someone's dogs because EVERY DOG MUST BE PET.

I knew about it in passing? Like that it was a form of storytelling and it was easy enough to figure out that one person played all the parts. DEEN has done a ton of bad anime lmfao! Mostly just their animation quality is awful? So whenever a show is slated to be animated by them it's... sad. I usually don't hold out any hope for it. If they can stay on model for most of Rakugo I'll be super impressed tbh.

Yeah, I do! I actually used to scanlate? But it got real old real fast. I hate the mentality that most of the people that read scans have (they're all so entitled) and also I've become very good friends with English language manga publishers/people that work in the business as translators, letterers, or editors or something. I actually considered going that route for a career and would totally still pick it up if I could.
For a long time, nothing I wanted to read was getting licensed. But that's changed now that the manga bubble actually burst and companies are way more selective with what they will license! The company whose marketing director I'm friends with has licensed SO many titles that I really love, too, so I'd rather support them if I can! If it's not licensed, I try to buy it in Japanese. Then I yell at everyone I know that works for various companies that they should totally read said title and try to license it lmfao... It hasn't worked yet but I do know that a lot of them have read the titles in question.
My only problem (aside from money orz) is shelf space. I have to limit myself to shorter titles so I always ask my publisher friend if they know how long something is gonna be, lol.

Yeah! It's all the important matches so the show ends up being massive. There's not even an intermission or anything? It's crazy!

Oh no, that's so sad ;A; I don't know what I would do without at least one dog in my life tbh. I'd probably be incredibly depressed. My dogs usually laynext to me on the couch so I just reach over and pet them whenever I feel like bothering them.
